~Plot Synopsis~
Simon, a Jewish immigrant, adopts the child of a woman dying at sea, and later builds up a
successful pawnbroking-auctioneering business on New York's East Side. The girl, Ruth, falls in love
with Richard, who is admitted to a bond-brokerage firm when his prospective father-in-law invests
his entire fortune in the firm. Owing to the evil machinations of broker Paul Groode, Simon loses
everything and is forced to start over again as a peddler. Eventually he catches the crooked broker
and regains his money. All ends happily with the lovers united.
