~Ruth Roland~

Born: August 26, 1892 in San Francisco, California, USA
Died: September 22, 1937 in Hollywood, California, USA
~From The Syracuse Herald, November 19, 1916, Syracuse,
New York~
Ruth Roland has been acting for eighteen years and she is only 22 now. She made her debut at the
age of 4 on the Pacific coast as Baby Ruth and was regarded as a phenomenon.
When she was playing "Little Lord Fauntleroy," at the age of 6 in San Francisco she attracted the
attention of David Belasco who said that she was the best child actress ever seen.
When she was eleven her parents sent her to a private school where she remained until she was 14.
Her success as an ingenue was even greater than as a child. Her versatility was such that she played
comedy or drama with equal grace.
"Several years ago," she said recently, "I was 'discovered' by an motion picture director who engaged
me to appear in Western and Indian photoplays." Later she was put into comedies and was highly
successful. Then she was offered a contract with the Balboa company at a flattering salary to star in
the big "Who Pays?" series to be made for Pathe. She accepted.
There followed "The Red Circle,"one of the famous Pathe serials and a number of Gold Rooster
plays including "Comrade John," in which she was cast opposite the popular actor manager, William
Elliott, and "A Matrimonial Martyr," in which she was last seen here.
If you doubt that she is one of the most popular screen figures of the day, just ask the postmaster at
Long Beach, Cal., where she gets her mail. From all parts of the globe come thousands of letters a
year written by admirers.
An interviewer found her the other day with a puzzled look on her face spelling out word by word an
article concerning her in a Spanish newspaper of Puerto Rico.
"Why the wrinkled forehead?" She was asked.
"Well,"  she answered, "here's a newspaper from Puerto Rico announcing my coming marriage to a
young Puerto Rican lawyer. Here's a clipping from a London newspaper stating that I'm to be
married to a captain in the British army, now serving in the Britain. Each paper specifies October as
the month that will witness the happy nuptials. Now what I want to know is this - have I a double or
have I been in a sub-conscious state met two men that I don't know exist and accepted each of
them? It's impossible!"
Miss Roland will next be seen on the screen in "The Sultans," a thrilling comedy-melodrama from
Henry C. Roland's well known book, produced in the sunshine of California by the Balboa company
and colored by the famous Pathe process.
