Helene Costello was once a $3,000-a-week star of the silent screen.

Costello's life faded into obscurity after her brief but brilliant career on the screen. In the years
before her death in 1957 she had been the victim of illness, divorce and financial worries.

She first appeared on screen with her father, matinee idol Maurice Costello, in "Les Miserables" in
1909. She had roles in more that 60 films before coming to Hollywood in the early 1920s.

At the time, her father was a ranking romantic star of both motion pictures and the stage and her
sister, Dolores Costello, was a rising star of the films.

In the next few years, Helene appeared as a leading lady in a number of films, several of them with
John Barrymore, who later was the husband of her sister Dolores.
