American actress Dorothy Devore, born Alma Inez Williams in Fort Worth, was a very popular silent film
comedienne who got her start entertaining in musical theater, vaudeville, and nightclubs as a teenager. In
film, Devore first gained notice playing tiny, mischievous gals in the romantic Al Christie comedies during
the 1910s. She continued with the series through the early 1920s. At her peak, Devore was among the
highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. As her popularity waned, she continued to star in a few full-length
romantic comedies with different studios, but these were never as successful. Devore returned to short
films in 1927 and with the coming of talkies, she left the industry for good.
