~Plot Synopsis~
A relief detachment of the French Foreign Legion arrives at a remote fort in the African desert to find
the garrison manned by a force of dead men. After a major finds an adjutant's body pierced by a French
bayonet near a dead legionnaire, an Arab attack begins. The bodies then disappear and the story shifts
to England: As a boy, Michael "Beau" Geste (Ronald Colman) overhears his aunt, Lady Brandon (Alice
Joyce), telling of a sapphire heirloom, replaced by an imitation. When the gem disappears, Beau, Digby
(Neil Hamilton), and John (Ralph Forbes)--the three brothers--disappear, each leaving a note assuming
the guilt. They join the Foreign Legion, Beau and John serving under brutal Sergeant Lejaune (Noah
Beery), and Digby, as trumpeter at another post. The men revolt against Lejaune's cruelty, and he
determines to get the jewel Beau is rumored to carry, but the garrison is attacked by Arabs and Beau is
killed. John revenges his brother by killing Lejaune, and Digby provides Beau with a Viking funeral.
Digby also is killed, and John returns home to Isobel, his fiancée.
