~After Midnight~
~314-32: Norma Shearer & Lawrence Gray~
~Plot Synopsis~
Joe Miller, a robber, holds up Mary, a nightclub hostess. After knocking him unconscious, she
sympathetically cares for him, and under her guidance he decides to reform and marry her. Mary skimps
and saves to buy a $1,000 Liberty Bond while Joe saves to invest in a taxicab; then Maizie, Mary's
gold-digging, irresponsible sister, returns home with a similar bond given as a favor at a wild party.
Depressed at the futility of her efforts, Mary cashes her bond and buys a fancy wardrobe, then accepts an
invitation to a party, where she becomes intoxicated after having seen Joe drinking with his former
cronies. While returning from the party with her sister, Mary causes an accident, and Maizie is killed.
Realizing their error, Mary and Joe plan to start anew.
