~Plot Synopsis~
Having turned seventeen, William Sylvanus Baxter feels that it is time to devote himself to weighty
issues, but romance takes the place of philosophy when he falls in love with Lola Pratt. A confirmed
coquette, Lola agrees to elope with William, but runs off with George Cooper instead. William,
despondent, feels that the only thing that a man in his position can do is commit suicide, but then
May Parcher, whom he has known from childhood, comes to visit. Now, instead of separating them,
William combines philosophy and romance. He realizes that while Lola is gone forever, May is
present and willing, and so he decides to fall in love with her.
