Based on the novel Hungry Hearts by Anzia Yezierska (Boston, 1920).
The Levins come to the United States from Russia in hope of a better life but find it very difficult to
make a living, even with everybody working. When Rosenblatt raises their rent, an enraged Hannah
mutilates the walls, an act for which she must stand trial. Lawyer David Kaplan, who is Rosenblatt's
nephew and Sara's sweetheart, successfully defends Hannah, marries Sara, and takes the Levin
family out of the ghetto and into his suburban home.
